"... Thousands of items were shown by more than 600 exhibitors, designers and manufacturers from around the world -- nearly half of them from outside the U.S. -- at the four-day show, which closed Tuesdayat the Jacob J. Javits Center. And chairs exemplified the furniture's wide range of imaginative styles, creative shapes, materials and colors.

In keeping with the contemporary spirit of the show, there were clean, inventive profiles in brightly colored new materials, but also plenty of alluringly used natural materials, including sustainable and recycled woods and fibers.

Cushions? They were just not needed in several of these crafty designs.

Susan Woods Studio's New Wave (www.aswoon.com) line includes a Ribbon Float chair and lounge, made of bent poplar plywood, that elegantly combines two characteristics -- the no-upholstery look with the eco-appeal of natural wood.

The low-slung furniture's rolling curves and the collage effect of its natural wood grain are pleasing to look at, but how about sitting down?

"I've had people try these chairs out, and they're surprised to find how comfortable they are," said Wood, a New York City-based designer. "The curves are made to fit body shapes naturally."
